Group Checking Florence Healthy Food Options

Elizabeth Kizer of Florence was awarded a grant from the Arizona Area Health Education Center (AHEC) to measure the availability of healthy foods in Florence, by using a valid and reliable survey measure called NEMS, or Nutritional Environment Measurement Survey. Last month, she trained six coalition members who volunteered to help in this project. Over the last several weeks, group members surveyed all of the stores and restaurants in town to measure the availability of healthy foods, affordability of healthy foods, preparation methods used, facilitators and barriers to healthy choices, differences in adult and kid’s menus, and signs and promotion materials. Kizer is working with a coalition of 56 local residents for more healthy food choices in Florence. The group wants increased access to fresh produce and whole grains at reasonable prices, and restaurants to support healthy choices.
