South Tucson Healthy Habits Fair

On Saturday February 1st 2014, the South Tucson Healthy Habits coalition, of which the CRCPHP is a member, held the third annual “Healthy Habits South Tucson” fair at the John A. Valenzuela Youth Center. Despite damp weather conditions, the South Tucson community didn’t let a little rain stop them from coming out! Over 50 wonderful exhibitors and community partners from across Tucson helped to make the event one to remember. Demonstrations included preparing healthy and low cost meals, getting active through music and dance, and how to make basic bike repairs. The Pima County Health Department gave free flu shots; a “Kidical Mass” bike ride for families and children was held by the Living Street Alliance; people had the opportunity to enroll in the healthcare marketplace; and there were many more great activities. Overall, the event helped to accomplish the coalition’s goal for people to “get out, get moving, and get healthy.”

The coalition also puts on a wellness event the first Saturday of every month. Many community partners make up the South Tucson Healthy Habits coalition including; Our Family Services, Primavera, the House of Neighborly Services, the Garden Kitchen, the City of South Tucson, local schools and libraries, as well as several groups from the University of Arizona. Individuals who are part of the South Tucson community are also welcome to attend meetings, which are held monthly. You can find out more about the coalition by contacting healthystucson@gmail.com.

See you next year!
