The CRCPHP & Nutritional Sciences hosted guest lecturer, Dr. Heather Greenlee on September 25. Dr. Greenlee is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, at the Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. Dr. Greenlee has conducted researched on the use of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) and lifestyle modifications for breast cancer prevention and control. Florence Group Searches for a Way Out of The (Food) Desert

Elizabeth Kizer, a doctoral student studying public health, with a committee and a group of volunteers has done research into the healthy food choices at Florence’s restaurants and stores. She presented her findings with interested groups last week. Florence restaurants averaged a score of 12 out of a possible 63 points. The stores scored no better, with an average score of 7 out of a possible 30 points.

Dr. Charles Raison was the Awarded 2013 IMHR Pilot Grant

Charles Raison, MD, CRCPHP Member Associate Professor of Psychiatry in the College of Medicine and Barry and Janet Lang Associate Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has been awarded a 2013 IMHR Pilot Grant of $20,000 by the Institute for Mental Health Research to study, “Antidepressant Effects of Whole Body Hyperthermia (WBH)”.

Angela Valencia and Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health have initiated a collaborative research approach with El Rio Community Health Center to address childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem affecting 10% of 2 year olds and > 20% of 5 year olds and even higher percentages of Hispanics and Native Americans. The overall objective of this project was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of WIC staff and WIC moms regarding weight perceptions for infants and toddlers.

City of South Tucson Safety Fair

On Thursday, July 25, 2013, the City of South Tucson is hosting its first annual Healthy Habits Community-Wide Peace and Safety Fair. Come out and join your friends, family, and neighbors for a FREE event featuring information, demonstrations, and tips on safety, including: nutrition, health, healthy food preparation, hate crimes, self-defense, peace and civility, child fingerprinting, and gun safety. There will also be raffle prizes, giveaways, food, and MORE! Fair is from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM at the John Valenzuela Youth Center on 1550 South 6th Avenue.

The Garden Kitchen is a seed-to-table health education program that demonstrates how to grow, buy, store, and cook nutritious food. Staffed by public health students, the kitchen opened its doors in the fall of 2012.  Located in South Tucson, the kitchen was created as a partnership between the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, UA Pima County Cooperative Extension, the City of South Tucson, and Pima County.
